Internet Safety
The internet is quickly becoming a necessity for Americans of all ages. It gives us instant access to information, allows us to keep up with family and friends, and provides countless entertainment options.

At the Polk County Sheriffs' Office, we utilize the internet as a law enforcement tool to help keep the community informed of public safety issues as well as to help deter crime.

The internet allows us to have the entire world at our fingertips. However, that also means the entire world has access to us. Cyber safety is a concern for everyone who uses the internet regularly, especially parents.

In today's age of social networking and online gaming, kids are at a much greater risk of becoming a victim of cybercrime. From online bullying, to identity theft and sexual predators, the internet can be a very dangerous place.

The best way to ensure your children's safety online is to closely monitor their internet usage. Make sure you know which sites they visit, who they are talking to, and what they're doing online. There are several software programs that allow parents to monitor children's internet usage.

More importantly, personal discussions with your children about being safe on the internet are a must for parents. Many government agencies have helpful online resources to assist you.

The FTC manages OnGuardOnline.gov, which provides practical tips from the federal government and the technology industry to help you be on guard against internet fraud, secure your computer, and protect your personal information.
